How the Inner Dialogue Shapes Our Thinking,

Decision Making and Behaviors

By Simon Vetter

Most people think their biggest challenge is external: Market pressure. Team dynamics. Strategy.

It’s not. The real battle is internal.

Three voices are shaping how you think and every decision you make, every risk you take, and every opportunity you either step into or walk away from. If you don’t learn to recognize them, you will be led by default instead of by design.

Here are the three internal voices:

1. The Inner Critic: Your Inner Risk Manager Gone Rogue

The critical voice is sharp, fast, and convincing. It sounds like:

“You’re not ready.” “What if you fail?”.  “Others are better than you.”

It was built to protect you. To keep you safe from rejection, failure, and embarrassment. And in small doses, it’s useful. When this voice dominates, you hesitate when you should act. You overanalyze when you should decide. You aim for perfection when progress would win. And slowly, you trade growth for safety.

But where adaptability is everything and job security is no longer guaranteed, waiting for certainty is a losing strategy.

2. The Inner Champion: Your Inner Driver with a Blind Spot

The confident voice is the one leader’s like to identify with. It says:

“You’ve got this.” “Take the shot.” “Figure it out on the way.”

This voice fuels momentum. It helps you move when others freeze. It’s the reason bold visions ever become reality. But confidence, unchecked, becomes dangerous. It can make you ignore feedback. Skip preparation. Underestimate complexity.

The result? Leaders who move fast… in the wrong direction.

True leadership isn’t about being confident all the time. It’s about knowing when your confidence is grounded in reality and when it’s compensating for it.

Confidence without awareness creates arrogance. Confidence with awareness creates trust.

3. The Inner Intuitive: Your Most Powerful, Most Ignored Advantage

The intuitive voice is different. It doesn’t shout. It doesn’t argue. It knows – quietly.

It’s that silent signal when something feels right, even if you can’t explain why. Or when something looks good on paper but feels off in your gut.

This voice is built on pattern recognition, experience, and subconscious intelligence. It processes far more than your conscious mind ever could.Untitled design (3)

In moments of complexity, uncertainty, or incomplete data, intuition is not a luxury.

It’s a leadership advantage. The best leaders don’t choose between logic and intuition. They integrate both.

Because when your decisions align not just with data, but with deeper conviction, people feel it.

And that’s what creates belief, commitment, and movement toward a shar

ed future.

The Real Work: Integration, Not Elimination

You don’t need to silence any of these voices. You need to lead them.

The critical voice asks: What could go wrong?

The confident voice says: Let’s go anyway.

The intuitive voice asks: What feels true here?

Most leaders are run by one. Exceptional leaders orchestrate all three.

3 Action Steps to Take Control of Your Inner Dialogue

1. Name the Voice Before You Obey It

The next time you hesitate or rush into a decision, pause and ask: “Which voice is speaking right now? Is it helping or protecting me?”

2. Create a 3-Voice Decision Filter: Before any major decision, run it through all three lenses:

Critic: What risks am I ignoring?

Champion: Where am I holding back unnecessarily?

Intuitive: What does my gut feeling say?

Powerful question: “If all three voices had a vote, what decision would they agree on?”

3. Train Your Intuition Daily: Your intuition strengthens with attention.

Create space for it. Walk without distraction. Think without input. Reflect without urgency.

Powerful question: If I removed fear and ego from this decision, what would I know to be true?”

Your vision, your leadership, your future…

They’re not just built by strategy.

They’re shaped by the voices you choose to listen to.
